With each new matter, Derek dives head-first into the case to familiarize himself with all of the facts and procedures involved. Clients appreciate his focused ability to stay on task and organized with an approachable, friendly attitude.
Derek grew up hearing stories from an admired family friend who was an attorney, and from an early age, he knew that the profession of law was the career for him. After graduating magna cum laude from Hope College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Derek went on to Law School at Valparaiso University, where he fell in love with the campus, met his wife, and earned his Juris Doctorate and MBA.
While in law school, Derek worked as a student representative at the Law School Tax Clinic. There, he represented clients under the supervision of an attorney, prepared petitions to the IRS and discussed options to help clients achieve relief. This experience taught him to expand what he looks for in his cases and avoid the pitfall of tunnel vision. He also participated in several externships, conducting legal research, drafting various pleadings, and meeting with clients for Indiana Legal Services, Porter County Superior Court II, the Lake County Public Defender, and the State Appellate Defender’s Office, among others.
Before coming to Zaumser, Derek gained valuable experience at a smaller firm, where he focused his practice on first- and third-party insurance matters. His all-inclusive approach and attention to client feedback have allowed him to learn and grow in his profession and incorporate quick thinking to adjust strategy when necessary.
Derek’s teamwork philosophy stems from his passion for basketball. He played every position in college, and he and his wife enjoy the sport together and continue to play on, and coach for, various community church leagues. Both in basketball and in the courtroom, Derek strives to play a fair game.
