Jessica Kingston tackles legal questions head on, breaking down complex employment issues to pursue winning solutions for our clients.

Jessica focuses her practice on Employment and Labor Law, working with clients on wrongful termination, FMLA, discrimination, hostile work environment, harassment, and retaliation claims. She is an experienced litigator, defending claims in federal and state court as well as before the EEOC and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. Jessica loves the investigative process and working with parties connected to the precipitating event to determine what actually occurred, what may have gone wrong, and how to properly respond to the claim. Through this method, she strives to create a better work environment for both employers and employees.

Jessica’s logical approach is only natural given her original intention to become a math teacher. But after taking a criminal justice course while attending the Honors College at Michigan State University, she became fascinated with the law and embarked upon a legal career instead. In addition to her studies, Jessica analyzed U.S. Supreme Court opinions as a professional research assistant and volunteered with the Lansing Teen Court, a diversionary program for first-time youth offenders. She also served as Design Editor and later Editor-in-Chief of the Red Cedar Log student yearbook, and was a member of All-Girl Competitive Cheerleading, an intercollegiate club team.

After earning her Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School, Jessica joined the litigation department of a large Grand Rapids-based law firm, where she was responsible for drafting, discovery, and motion practice in various cases, including claims brought by the General Retirement System of the City of Detroit. Jessica then moved in-house, managing lawsuits across the country for companies involved in false advertising and deceptive sales practices challenges, and collaborating with local counsel to develop and implement case strategies. Many of these actions were brought by states attorneys general, and her efforts led to victories in several matters, allowing her clients to keep proprietary information and product formulas confidential.

Outside of the office, Jessica serves as Secretary of the Board for the Detroit Spartans, a Michigan State alumni organization that encourages connection, service, and educational investment for future Spartans. Jessica is also a Competitive Cheer Official for the Michigan High School Athletic Association, and enjoys spending time with her husband and two young sons.
